“McDonld’s “ Has Donated More Than 700 Books to Latvia’s Foster Families

Patrons of Latvia’s leading fast food chain, “McDonald’s”, have donated over 700 books to Latvia’s foster families.  It is reported that 5,000 children in Latvia are under government care, and 1,500 of these live in foster families.  Under the sponsorship of “McDonald’s” and in cooperation with the Latvian Foster Family Society, people in Latvia were invited to leave a new or gently used book at a “McDonald’s” restaurant.  The donated books, each accompanied by the donor’s dedication, will soon be distributed to foster families by the Latvian Foster Family Society.  The donated books are suitable for various age groups, not only in the Latvian language, but also in Russian and in English.

“We are gratified at the public’s generous response to our campaign for book donations – over half of Latvia’s foster children will receive a book.  I am confident that we will be able to repeat this successful campaign”, stated Marius Stonkus, Head of Marketing Baltics at McDonald’s (Premier Restaurants Latvia).

“We understand that children now are reading less, so we are pleased for each child who wants to read more.  A campaign such as ours encourages children to explore the world of books.  It is difficult for foster parents and their families to stretch their limited budgets for the purchase of new books, so this gift will be very welcome.  Thank you to everyone who responded to “McDonald’s” campaign”, said the Chairwoman of the Latvian Foster Family Society, Ilze Golvere.

An increased interest in books and in the joy of reading is a goal of “McDonald’s”.  In 2012, with the purchase of a “McDonald’s Happy Meal”, patrons were offered the choice of a book in place of the usual toy.  During this campaign in Latvia, 40,000 books were distributed with a “Happy Meal”.  Last year, the “Happy Meal” offer was expanded to the Digital Book Project, offering children unique interactive books available on various platforms, usable on smartphones, tablets and on the internet.
