Project "Secound chance"

There are circumstances, where raising a families’ income is not possible. In these cases, it is valuable to identify resources that are available without cost. Learning to identify what these resources are was the goal of project “Second Chance”, which took place this past July. Families of the Association came together for 3 creative and informative seminars, where participants learned how to take existing household items and transform them into new ones with an entirely new function. The hardest part of these seminars for participants was to remove the stigma of poverty that was attached to this sort of activity.

Taking something old and transforming it into something new is a form of recycling and should not be associated with acts of poverty. Throughout the project, participants exchanged ideas and while doing so, developed new friendships and expanded their support network. After the seminars, which took place at the LFFA support center “Dzeguzēns”, 40 participants comprising of children, youth and parents attended a 4-day camp at “Ķoņu dzirnavās”, where participants learned about sustainable living models and how to put them into practice. For example; how to use locally grown produce; how to use local materials found in nature and apply them to household use (using tree bark as a bedding). Many thanks go to our “Dzirnavu” hosts for their warm hospitality!

The main objective of project “Second Chance” is to inspire participants with new ideas and for these new ideas to be put into practice by next summer. Financial support for this project was given by the “Ziedot” fund.
