Project - Summer Camp
Camp "Happiness is in the Family" financially supported by "Cemex" took place from 12-16 August at "Ķoņu dzirnavas". The main theme of the camp was relationships in the family. On the first day of the camp the participants created their family tree, which was then supplemented during the camp by family members and other participants. Families got to know each other better day by day.
As one of the topics of the camp was having a “Natural and Healthy Lifestyle”, these principles were learned and observed during the camp. For example, meals were prepared from products grown by local farmers, and only natural materials were used, with children doing the baking themselves.
During the camp discussions, lectures, role-playing, competitions, hikes and creative workshops using natural materials took place. Some of the activities were carried out separately for children and parents. Other activities were held between both parents and their children. Every evening parents gathered for support group meetings to evaluate the day that has passed.
The activity participants were divided into groups:
1) Educational activities; mini-seminar and discussion about human values, a seminar about having a safe and healthy lifestyle at home (household chemicals, food), working groups of participants about possibilities to live nature-friendly lifestyle in various situations, getting acquainted with Latvian national traditions.
2) Supporting activities; support groups for parents, team building exercises, individual consultations for children and parents.
3) Creative activities; forming an image of a human body, collage from natural materials, "new from old" recycling activity, family tree, baking pretzels, folklore evening, dance evening with performances, and a fashion show.
4) Physical activities; jogging in the morning (optional), morning exercises for everybody, hike, sports games, plays, swimming, and a boat trip.
Approximately 40 participants took part, which was made up of guardians and foster families from Riga and other cities of Latvia. As a result, participants gained a positive and inspiring experience participating in activities, and parents could observe their children engaging with each other. They could observe how responsive, cooperative and/or reserved they are, and how the children react in different situations.
Participants of the camp have also increased the number of their social contacts whereby children and youth have continued seeing each other after the camp.
